Flex Mobile Features

Flex Mobile brings your schedule and patient communication with you anywhere you have your mobile device. Manage your office's Open Dental schedule, text patients, and start a call with a patient using Mango.

This guide walks you through the features available once your device is set up.

📱Note: Flex Mobile is designed for your mobile device. Do not install it on shared office tablets; those devices access Flex using your office's custom Flex website. Learn more about logging into your office's Flex URL on tablets and desktops, using our guides below:

⚠️Before you start: Install the Flex Mobile app and add your device to your office's Flex Mobile settings. Adding devices and adjusting settings requires an administrative user account. See the guides below to complete the setup.

In This Guide:

 

When Schedule Access is enabled, Flex Mobile shows your live Open Dental schedule on the device.

From here you can:

  • Launch the App Tutorial:

  • Choose which operatories appear: 

    1. Tap the grid icon (9 dots) at the top right to open the menu.
    2. Check the operatories you want visible. 
      • Note: Each operatory has its own color.

  • View appointment details

    • At a glance, each appointment shows the patient's first and last name, the appointment note and time range. FlexMobile_view appt details1.png

      2. Tap again to close.

 

  • Manage an appointment

    1. Tap and hold an appointment to open a quick actions menu:
      • Text Patient: Open a text conversation with the selected patient.
      • Edit Appointment: Update the date, time, or other details. After making changes, tap Edit to apply.
      • Break Appointment: Cancel the appointment without deleting it.
      • Unscheduled List: Move the appointment to your unscheduled list in Open Dental. FlexMobile_edit appt menu1-edited.png
  • Add a new appointment: 

    1. Tap and hold an empty space, confirm by choosing Add.                                                                            FlexMobile_add appt1-edited.png

    5. Finish by tapping Add.
      • 💡ProTip: Use the note field to capture the reason for the visit, where the patient feels pain, your initials or "Scheduled in Flex Mobile" so your team can reference these details when preparing for treatment.
  • Jump to any date:

    1. Tap the date in the top center to open the calendar.

All changes sync to Open Dental in real time.

With Text Enabled on the Flex Mobile app, tap the SMS icon in the bottom left to open patient text messages.

From there you can:

  • See all unread patient messages at the top.

  • Reply to patients in real time, just as you would from Flex on your computer.

  • Browse recent conversations.

    • Choose a tab at the top: Recent or Unread
    • Type a name or keyword into the search bar.

  • Send a new message

  • Pin messages to save for later:

💡ProTip: The Notification Schedule controls when the device is alerted of new messages. If you prefer that texts not alert your personal phone after hours, set the schedule to match office hours on your device. For practices using Mango alongside Flex, your team can move from a text conversation in Flex Mobile to a phone call in Mango without breaking the workflow.

To place a call:

  • Tap and hold a patient's phone number in Flex Mobile. Mango opens to the dial pad with the number pre-dialed and ready to call.

📱Note: This requires both the Flex Mobile app and the Mango app installed on the device with the user signed into both. Mango + Flex users can use the links below to install each app:

Use the gear icon in the top left to switch between office views and add new locations.

With your device added and your settings dialed in. Flex Mobile gives every team member a portable version of the practice: the schedule, the texts, and the calls, all in one place.
